More than 5.3 million Australians will see their Centrelink payments rise from 20 September 2026, in what the government describes as the biggest pension indexation increase since March 2023.

What Happened

Services Australia has confirmed that a twice-yearly indexation round lifts the Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, Carer Payment, JobSeeker, Parenting Payment, Youth Allowance, ABSTUDY and Commonwealth Rent Assistance from 20 September 2026. Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek said the changes deliver an extra $4 billion in cost-of-living relief nationally.

Why It Matters

For households relying on these payments, indexation is not optional or means-tested extra help. It is a scheduled adjustment that flows automatically, and this round is larger than usual, directly affecting weekly and fortnightly budgets for pensioners, carers, jobseekers, single parents and students.

Who Is Affected

Anyone currently receiving one of the affected payments. Key new fortnightly rates from 20 September 2026 include:

  • Single Age Pension, Disability Support Pension or Carer Payment: $1,237.70 (up $36.80); couples combined $1,866.00 (up $55.60)
  • JobSeeker, single with no children: $833.70 (up $16.20); single parent rate: $892.80 (up $17.30)
  • Youth Allowance and ABSTUDY: $1,068.20 (up $20.90, a 2% rise)
  • Parenting Payment: $1,037.50 (up $20.30, a 2% rise)
  • Commonwealth Rent Assistance: $223.80 (up $4.40, a 2% rise)

Deeming rates, which affect how financial assets are assessed for payment purposes, also change from the same date. The lower deeming rate rises from 1.25% to 1.75% on financial assets up to $66,800 for singles and $110,600 for couples combined, and the upper rate rises from 3.25% to 3.75% above those thresholds.

What to Do / What to Watch

No application is required. The increases apply automatically to eligible payments. If you receive one of the affected payments, check your new fortnightly rate through your myGov or Centrelink account after 20 September. If you hold financial assets that are assessed under deeming, it is worth reviewing how the new deeming rates affect your assessable income, since this can flow through to your payment rate.
