Local Context

Brisbane City Council’s Toowong and Auchenflower neighbourhood plan describes the Toowong and Auchenflower area as containing “the greatest intensity and mixture of land uses” in the plan area, and functions as a Major Centre for inner western Brisbane. The precinct sits between the Toowong and Auchenflower railway stations, fronting the Brisbane River. We could not find an official source giving an exact distance or direction from the CBD, so we have left that detail out rather than repeat an unverified figure.

Housing & Property Character

Australian Bureau of Statistics 2021 Census figures show flats and apartments make up 67.9% of occupied private dwellings in Toowong, with separate houses at 28.5% and semi-detached, row, terrace or townhouse dwellings at 2.5%. That apartment-heavy mix reflects Toowong’s role as a Major Centre with high intensity development around the station and shopping village.

A heritage overlay applies to several confirmed places in Toowong, including Toowong Memorial Park, Toowong Cemetery and the former Toowong Municipal Library building, along with a proposed Local Heritage Place citation for several properties on Archer Street. A general Character Residential zone exists in Brisbane City Plan, though we were not able to confirm its precise mapped extent within Toowong itself, so any specific claim about a particular street should be checked using Council’s City Plan online tool.

Getting Around

Toowong railway station has four platforms and sits on the Ipswich, Rosewood and Springfield lines, adjoining Toowong Village Shopping Centre. The Regatta ferry terminal serves the F1 CityCat route, running towards both the University of Queensland at St Lucia and Northshore Hamilton. Bus routes 411, 412, 417 and 470 also run through the area, connecting Toowong to the University of Queensland, Milton and the city, though as with any bus service it is worth checking current timetables before relying on a specific route number.

Schools & Education

Toowong State School operates under an equidistant catchment area, with its enrolment management plan gazetted in February 2026. Indooroopilly State High School, nearby, operates under a negotiated catchment area. Because catchment boundaries do not always follow suburb names exactly, the Queensland Government’s EdMap tool is the right way to confirm which school actually applies to a specific address.

Shopping & Everyday Services

Brisbane City Council’s own neighbourhood plan text describes the Toowong centre precinct as “the social and economic heart of Toowong” and the Major Centre for inner western Brisbane, with the greatest mix of retail, commercial and social land uses in the area. Toowong Village Shopping Centre sits directly at the train station. We did not find an official source naming any further specific retail strip beyond this centre designation.

Parks & Recreation

Toowong Memorial Park on Sylvan Road is the focal point of the neighbourhood plan’s Memorial Park precinct, providing active and passive recreation space, with council’s own documents noting scope for future sporting facility expansion there. Toowong Library also operates from within the suburb as part of Council’s library network, and Council maintains a dedicated suburb parks page for Toowong covering the fuller current list, including Moorlands Park on the river.

Planning & Development

Toowong sits within the Toowong and Auchenflower neighbourhood plan under Brisbane City Plan 2014, which sets out precincts including the Toowong residential precinct, the Dunmore residential precinct, the Toowong centre precinct and the Memorial Park precinct. An older, superseded Toowong and Indooroopilly district neighbourhood plan also exists in Council’s archives, so it is worth confirming which plan is currently operative for a given address before relying on any older document.
