St Lucia Suburb Guide: What to Know Before Choosing St Lucia

Shaded riverside street of traditional Queenslander homes with a glimpse of the Brisbane River

St Lucia is an inner-city riverside suburb about 4.5km from the Brisbane CBD, dominated by the University of Queensland’s main campus. It is a leafy, established suburb with a mix of low-rise apartments and older character housing, and a notably younger, more transient population than most Brisbane suburbs given its student base.

Population and Housing

The 2021 Census recorded 12,220 people in St Lucia, with a median age of 25, well below the Brisbane average and consistent with a large student population. By comparison, the 2016 Census recorded 12,574 people in the same suburb boundary, so the population has been roughly flat to slightly down over that period rather than growing.

Housing is dominated by units: 59.6% of occupied dwellings are flats or apartments, against 33.0% separate houses and 6.9% semi-detached or townhouses. Group households make up almost 20% of occupied dwellings, well above typical Brisbane suburbs, again consistent with student share housing.

Transport

There is no railway station in St Lucia itself. The UQ Lakes busway station on College Road is the suburb’s main public transport hub, serving multiple cross-river bus routes. The UQ St Lucia CityCat terminal, on Sir William Macgregor Drive, is the upstream terminus of the Brisbane River ferry network and sits directly in the suburb, alongside a second stop at Guyatt Park.

Schools

Ironside State School, on Swann Road, is the suburb’s public primary school and dates back to 1870. There is no public secondary school located within St Lucia itself. As with any suburb, verify the exact catchment for a specific address using the Queensland Government’s official EdMap catchment tool rather than assuming from a suburb guide.

Health

There is no hospital located in St Lucia. The University of Queensland’s on-campus facilities are teaching and research spaces, not a public hospital.

Parks and Local Life

Guyatt Park, with playgrounds and picnic areas alongside its ferry wharf, and St Lucia Golf Links, one of only two Brisbane City Council owned golf courses, are both within the suburb. Ironside Park hosts the St Lucia Community Hall.

Shopping and Everyday Life

St Lucia has small local retail strips rather than a major shopping centre of its own. The nearest significant retail is Toowong Village, in the adjoining suburb of Toowong, which Brisbane City Council designates as the Major Centre serving the wider area including St Lucia.

Planning and Development

St Lucia sits within Brisbane City Council’s Toowong-Auchenflower Neighbourhood Plan area. A current, separately confirmed council project is the St Lucia to West End Bridge, a proposed pedestrian and cycle bridge across the Brisbane River connecting the two suburbs.

Flood and Property Due Diligence

St Lucia is bounded by two reaches of the Brisbane River and was significantly affected by the January 2011 Brisbane River flood, severely enough that the UQ ferry terminal itself was destroyed and later rebuilt to a flood-resilient design. This confirms genuine river-flood exposure in general terms, but says nothing about any specific address. Before relying on a property in St Lucia, check the official Brisbane City Council Flood Awareness Map and order a FloodWise Property Report for the exact address.

Nearby Suburbs Worth Comparing

Toowong (adjoining, the area’s retail and commercial centre, denser mixed-use), Indooroopilly (adjoining, its own train station and major shopping centre, more family-oriented) and Taringa or Auchenflower (adjoining, similar inner-west character with rail access St Lucia lacks) are worth comparing if you are considering St Lucia.

If you are researching a specific St Lucia property, Narevella’s guides on flood risk checks, verifying a school catchment and body corporate checks for units cover the due diligence that matters most in an apartment-heavy suburb like this one.
