Wynnum Suburb Guide: What to Know Before Choosing Wynnum

Calm bayside foreshore reserve with Norfolk pines and a waterfront path in south east Queensland

Wynnum is a bayside suburb roughly 15 to 20km from the Brisbane CBD, on Moreton Bay, within Brisbane City Council’s Wynnum Manly Ward. Historically a seaside holiday town, it is now an established residential suburb with a heritage esplanade, jetty and tidal wading pool, and an older median age than many inner Brisbane suburbs.

Population and Housing

The 2021 Census recorded 14,036 people in Wynnum, with a median age of 43. Housing is house-dominated: 70.8% separate houses, 12.8% semi-detached or townhouses, and 16.2% flats or apartments, reflecting some recent unit development alongside the suburb’s traditional housing stock.

Transport

Wynnum and Wynnum Central railway stations both sit within the suburb on the Cleveland line, with Wynnum Central serving as the terminus for some services. There is no CityCat or ferry terminal at Wynnum. Brisbane’s CityCat network runs along the Brisbane River and does not extend into Moreton Bay, so despite its bay frontage, Wynnum has no ferry service of its own.

Schools

Wynnum State High School, on Peel Street, is one of Queensland’s older secondary schools, established in 1942. As with any suburb, verify the exact catchment for a specific address using the Queensland Government’s official EdMap catchment tool rather than assuming from a suburb guide.

Health

The Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre, known locally as Gundu Pa, on New Lindum Road, offers outpatient, primary care, dental and allied health services. It is a community health centre rather than a full acute hospital, and no acute hospital is located in Wynnum itself.

Parks and Local Life

Wynnum Library, on Florence Street, serves the suburb. The heritage-listed Wynnum Wading Pool, built in 1932, sits on the foreshore, which is the subject of Brisbane City Council’s 20 year Wynnum, Manly and Lota Foreshores Master Plan.

Shopping and Everyday Life

The Wynnum Central retail strip along Edith Street is the suburb’s own town-centre dining and shopping precinct. Wynnum Plaza Shopping Centre sits just across the boundary in the adjoining suburb of Wynnum West, so is worth knowing about but is not technically inside Wynnum itself.

Planning and Development

Wynnum is covered by Brisbane City Council’s Wynnum-Manly Neighbourhood Plan. A draft Wynnum Centre Suburban Renewal Precinct Plan was on public consultation through October and November 2025, and building heights across parts of the precinct were subsequently scaled back following that consultation, alongside the ongoing Foreshores Master Plan mentioned above.

Flood and Property Due Diligence

As a bayside suburb, Wynnum is subject to storm-tide and tidal flooding risk, a different flood type to river or creek flooding, and Brisbane City Council has produced specific severe-weather reference material for the greater Wynnum area on this basis. This confirms genuine general exposure, but says nothing about any specific address. Before relying on a property in Wynnum, check the official Brisbane City Council Flood Awareness Map and order a FloodWise Property Report for the exact address.

Nearby Suburbs Worth Comparing

Manly (adjoining, marina and sailing club character, similar bayside identity, same neighbourhood plan), Wynnum West (adjoining, more inland and residential, home to Wynnum Plaza) and Lota (adjoining, quieter, included in the same Foreshores Master Plan) are worth comparing if you are considering Wynnum.
