Runcorn is an outer-southern Brisbane suburb roughly 15 to 19km from the CBD, within Brisbane City Council’s Runcorn Ward alongside Sunnybank, Sunnybank Hills and Kuraby. It is a predominantly low-rise residential suburb, with part of the area near the train station identified for future transit-oriented planning.
Population and Housing
The 2021 Census recorded 14,199 people in Runcorn. A separate, larger ABS statistical area (SA2) covering Runcorn recorded an estimated 15,478 people as of June 2024, a different, broader boundary than the suburb itself, so the two figures should not be directly compared.
Housing is strongly detached and low-rise: 69.4% separate houses and 30.4% semi-detached or townhouses, with almost no flats or apartments, according to the 2021 Census.
Transport
Runcorn railway station, on Beenleigh Road, sits within the suburb on the Beenleigh line. Bus routes 150 and 155 also serve Runcorn, connecting to Browns Plains, the City and Griffith University.
Schools
Runcorn Heights State School (primary) and Runcorn State High School (secondary) are both located within the suburb. Runcorn State School, despite its name, is actually on the Sunnybank side of the boundary, not in Runcorn itself, a reminder that a school’s name does not always match its suburb. As with any suburb, verify the exact catchment for a specific address using the Queensland Government’s official EdMap catchment tool.
Health
Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Hospital, at the corner of Kessels and Troughton Roads, is nearby in the adjoining suburb of Coopers Plains, not in Runcorn itself, though it serves the wider area.
Parks and Local Life
Wally Tate Park, on Warrigal Road, is a large heritage-listed, council-owned park within Runcorn. Runcorn Pool, a heated outdoor 25 metre pool with water play facilities, also sits within the suburb.
Planning and Development
Part of Runcorn is covered by a Brisbane City Plan neighbourhood plan map that identifies precincts including a town centre, a business park and gateway civic area, and a location near the train station flagged for a possible future busway station. Council has also separately identified land at Bonemill Road, Runcorn, for renewal and transition.
Flood and Property Due Diligence
Suburb-level flood context is only ever general, and Runcorn is no exception. Before relying on a property in Runcorn, check the official Brisbane City Council Flood Awareness Map and order a FloodWise Property Report for the exact address, since this is the only way to understand flood risk for a specific property rather than the suburb as a whole.
Nearby Suburbs Worth Comparing
Sunnybank Hills, Sunnybank and Kuraby, the other three suburbs in the same Runcorn Ward grouping, are worth comparing if you are considering Runcorn.
