Currumbin is a coastal suburb in the City of Gold Coast, at the mouth of Currumbin Creek, about 23km south-southeast of Surfers Paradise. It is bounded by Currumbin Creek to the north (separating it from Palm Beach), Currumbin Waters to the south and southwest, Tugun to the south, the Pacific Motorway forming a western boundary, and the Coral Sea to the east. It is worth being clear from the outset that Currumbin (this coastal suburb), Currumbin Waters (a larger, separate, adjoining canal-estate suburb) and Currumbin Valley (a separate, inland hinterland locality) are three genuinely distinct places under the same council area, and they are easily confused when searching online. This guide is about coastal Currumbin specifically.
Population and Housing
At the 2021 Census, Currumbin had a population of 3,278, the smallest of the nearby Gold Coast coastal suburbs, with a median age of 42. Housing here is genuinely mixed rather than dominated by any one type: separate houses make up around 46%, flats or apartments around 41%, and townhouses around 13%. Currumbin should not be described as an almost-all-houses suburb. A notably high share of dwellings, close to 20%, were unoccupied at Census time, consistent with meaningful holiday-letting or secondary-dwelling stock in the area.
Transport
The Pacific Motorway borders the suburb’s western side, giving direct access toward Brisbane and toward Tweed Heads and northern New South Wales. A local bus route runs via Currumbin, including a stop at the Wildlife Sanctuary, and a separate route links Gold Coast Airport to the Broadbeach light rail interchange. There is no Gold Coast Light Rail (G:link) station in Currumbin today, and a previously proposed light rail extension south from Burleigh Heads through this corridor had its planning formally stopped by the Queensland Government in September 2025. Light rail access should be understood as not currently planned for Currumbin, rather than an upcoming feature to expect.
Schools
Currumbin State School is a public primary school with an equidistant catchment, and Palm Beach Currumbin State High School is a public secondary school with a negotiated catchment, serving a wide area. Always verify the specific address using the official Queensland Government EdMap tool (qgso.qld.gov.au/maps/edmap), noting that catchment status is never a guarantee of enrolment.
Health
There is no hospital within Currumbin. The nearest private hospital is in neighbouring Tugun, and the nearest full public hospitals, Robina Hospital and Gold Coast University Hospital, are a genuine drive away.
Shopping and Everyday Life
Currumbin does not have a major shopping centre of its own. Nearby Elanora has larger retail options for a full weekly shop.
Parks and Local Life
This is Currumbin’s strongest, most distinctive angle. Currumbin Beach, Currumbin Alley (a well-known surf break popular with longboarders) and Currumbin Rock Pools (a popular swimming spot upstream on the creek) are genuine, well-known local assets, and the suburb sits directly on the Gold Coast Oceanway shared cycling and walking path network. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is the suburb’s single largest amenity and a genuine daily-life asset for local families, not just a tourist attraction, and is open daily except Anzac Day and Christmas Day.
Planning and Development
Currumbin is governed by the City of Gold Coast City Plan. Rather than describing specific zoning or precinct detail here, since exact current provisions were not confirmed, buyers should check the City Plan’s online interactive mapping tool directly for any specific address of interest.
Flood and Property Due Diligence
Currumbin sits directly on the open coast, which is relevant to coastal erosion and storm-tide research, and at the mouth of Currumbin Creek, which is relevant to creek and riverine flooding. Both should be checked for any specific address using the official City of Gold Coast flood-mapping tools. As with any suburb, never rely on a suburb-wide flood verdict, since risk can vary significantly street by street and lot by lot.
Nearby Suburbs Worth Comparing
Buyers comparing Currumbin often also look at Palm Beach, Currumbin Waters, Currumbin Valley (a genuinely different hinterland locality), Tugun and Elanora.
