Miami Suburb Guide: What to Know Before Choosing Miami

Gold Coast beachside residential street mixing older homes with contemporary low-rise development

Miami is a coastal suburb in the City of Gold Coast, about 9km south of Surfers Paradise and about 17km north of the Queensland and New South Wales border. It adjoins Mermaid Waters and Mermaid Beach to the north, Robina to the west, and Burleigh Waters and Burleigh Heads to the south, with the Coral Sea to the east. The Gold Coast Highway runs the full length of the suburb as its commercial spine, and the beachfront takes in Nobby Beach, Miami Beach and North Burleigh Beach.

Population and Housing

At the 2021 Census, Miami had a population of 7,445 and a median age of 37. Housing here is genuinely even across three types: separate houses around 31%, townhouses around 32%, and flats or apartments around 37%, a more apartment-weighted mix than a typical Gold Coast hinterland suburb.

Transport

This is the strongest and most current story for Miami. The suburb gained two of its own Gold Coast Light Rail (G:link) stations in 2026, named Miami and Miami North, as part of a light rail extension south from Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads. This is a genuinely significant change, since Miami was previously a car-dependent suburb without any rail access at all. The Gold Coast Highway remains the main arterial route, and the Pacific Motorway is reachable via nearby interchanges.

Schools

Miami State High School, established in 1963, is a public secondary school offering Academic, Sports and Cultural specialisation programs, and Miami State School is a public primary school with an equidistant catchment. Both are located within the suburb. Always verify the specific address using the official Queensland Government EdMap tool (qgso.qld.gov.au/maps/edmap), noting that catchment status can change and being within a catchment never guarantees enrolment.

Health

There is no major hospital within Miami, though a small private day-surgery facility exists locally. Gold Coast University Hospital in Southport and Robina Hospital are the nearest full hospitals.

Shopping and Everyday Life

Two local shopping centres serve Miami: Miami One, anchored by a Coles supermarket, and the smaller Miami Village. The Nobby Beach café and dining strip along the Gold Coast Highway is also a well-known local drawcard.

Parks and Local Life

Pizzey Park is a genuine standout asset for this suburb, a large 60-hectare sports and recreation precinct with an aquatic centre that includes two outdoor 50-metre pools and an indoor pool, a large skate park, a big pump track, a large tennis club, several playgrounds, an off-leash dog area, and walking and cycling paths around a lake network. It serves around 25 local sporting clubs and is the subject of an ongoing staged council master plan of upgrades running through the rest of this decade. Three beaches, Nobby Beach, Miami Beach and North Burleigh Beach, sit within or adjoining the suburb, giving residents a genuine choice of swimming and surfing spots close to home.

Planning and Development

A Council-led community engagement process known as the Miami Precinct is currently underway, focused on further enhancing Pizzey Park and converting the local council depot site into a creative-industries arts hub. Council has described this as a significant, once-in-a-generation local investment. This should be understood as a genuinely current, active initiative rather than a completed project, and anyone interested in the area’s longer-term direction should follow its progress directly with Council.

Flood and Property Due Diligence

As a beachfront suburb, coastal erosion and storm-tide overlays are directly relevant to Miami, alongside general creek and overland-flow context. Always check the official City of Gold Coast flood-mapping tools for the specific address in question, rather than relying on a general suburb-wide impression.

Nearby Suburbs Worth Comparing

Buyers comparing Miami often also look at Mermaid Waters, Mermaid Beach, Burleigh Heads and Robina, each offering a different mix of beach access, transport and housing type.
